Online Care

Is Online Physiotherapy Worth It?

By The Physio Don

The COVID-19 pandemic forced healthcare to adapt quickly, and physiotherapy was no exception. What started as a necessity has evolved into a legitimate, effective option for many patients. But is online physiotherapy really as good as seeing someone in person?

The answer, like most things in healthcare, is: it depends. Let's break down when online physio shines — and when you should book an in-clinic appointment.

When Online Physio Works Well

  • Chronic pain management — Long-term back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia respond well to structured exercise programs and education, which translate perfectly to video calls
  • Post-surgical rehab (stable phase) — Once the acute healing phase has passed, progressive exercises and form checks via video are highly effective
  • Exercise programming — Strength and conditioning programs, including for athletes, can be designed, demonstrated, and progressed remotely
  • Ergonomic and postural issues — Desk-related pain is often solved through movement habit changes that we can guide you through via video
  • Rural or remote patients — If getting to a clinic is a 2-hour drive, online physio removes a major barrier to consistent care

When In-Clinic Is Better

  • Acute injuries — Fresh sprains, suspected fractures, or severe pain often need hands-on assessment
  • Manual therapy needs — Joint mobilisation, massage, and dry needling require physical contact
  • Complex cases — Multiple injuries, neurological conditions, or post-surgical cases in the early phase
  • When movement testing is critical — Some assessments require tactile feedback or equipment only available in-clinic

How Our Online Service Works

At The Physio Don, our online consultations include video assessment, personalised exercise prescription with video demonstrations, and ongoing progress tracking via our app. We also offer hybrid models — starting online and transitioning to in-clinic when appropriate, or vice versa.
